Kabra Blauw Collection by Boris van Berkum

Boris van Berkum is the designer behind the Kabra Blauw collection, produced by Heinen Delfts Blauw. This collection of decorative objects was created to revive the African sculptural tradition through a new artistic lens. The Kabra Blauw salt shaker has even been declared the official keepsake of the Slavery Memorial Year 2023-2024.

The decorative pieces are inspired by the African Kabra mask and the traditional Delft blue lidded vase. Their purpose is to create a symbolic reminder of the Netherlands' slavery past. "In Afro-Surinamese Winti culture, the colors blue and white represent the Kabra, the ancestors. Since the 17th century, Delft blue has been a quintessential Dutch tradition. What happens when we combine these two traditions into one showpiece? Does Kabra Blauw emerge?" Boris van Berkum is a neo-artist who merges styles and forms from various periods, cultures, and religions into new artworks. He does this after extensive research and in close collaboration with representatives of those cultures. His work spans various media, including ceramics, bronze, and 3D modeling techniques.
